Do AI Answers Without Search Mean Zero Visibility? 0 Cited Domains, 9 Business Names
Published

Counting only citations can incorrectly record visibility as 0. In measurements taken on 2026-08-19, we repeated the same prompt with the same model 4 times, and 2 runs did not perform a web search. Those 2 runs had 0 cited domains, but the answer bodies contained 9 distinct names of recommended businesses. Without separating citations from mentions, names that actually appeared in the answers disappear from the count.
How were there 9 business names with 0 cited domains?
Enabling search did not mean the model searched every time. It did not perform a search in 2 of the 4 runs.
Those 2 answers had 0 linked sources, but their bodies contained 9 actual business names. Within the same runs, the counts diverged: 0 citations and 9 mentions.
How did the two measures differ in runs that used search?
The other 2 runs performed web searches. Those runs produced 9 cited domains and 8 mentions in the answer bodies. When search behavior changed, the relationship between citations and mentions changed too.
The point is not that one measure matters more than the other. Citations show the evidence an answer links to. Mentions show the business names users actually read. Combining different measurements in one field makes it impossible to determine what was absent.
How far can these results be trusted?
The population consists of 1 commercial LLM supporting search grounding and 4 queries requesting local service business recommendations. The period is also a single measurement date, 2026-08-19. There is no guarantee that other models, industries, or dates will produce the same proportions.
Only 2 runs skipped search. This measurement did not establish where the 9 business names in the answer bodies came from, whether the names were accurate, or whether the same businesses would appear in the next run. These figures cannot be used to generalize about the stability of the model's internal knowledge or the performance of individual businesses.
The finding is narrow: 0 citations did not mean 0 mentions in the answer body. Intrix does not guarantee rankings, citations, or visibility.
What should you measure, then?
Judging visibility in AI answers by links alone misses part of the picture. To check how your site currently appears in AI answers and search paths, start by reviewing the measurement scope of the free SEO and GEO audit.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Q. What is the difference between a citation and a mention?
A citation is a source domain linked in an answer. A mention is a business name that actually appears in the answer body, even without a link. An answer can contain one without the other.
Q. Can we apply these results to our industry?
They cannot be applied directly. These are results from 1 model and 4 queries requesting local service business recommendations at a single point in time. Other industries require separate measurements.
